Extreme SEO!

Congratulations to one of our clients, Rod Baber of Head4Heights, who has just set a world record by making a mobile phonecall from the top of Mount Everest!

The full story is available on BBC News.

Now a slightly tenuous link to SEO...the media interest in this great achievement will be excellent for Rod's website. Already he has several PR7 links from the BBC, aswell as page links from newspaper websites such as The Daily Telegraph, The Times, and many links from social sites such as Digg. While we're not suggesting you need to climb Everest to optimise your website, this is a classic case of generating natural, good quality links!

Well done Rod! We want to hear the full story when you get back!

SearchPath in Cambodia

We've been doing some work with Globalteer, helping them with their web marketing including advising on improvements they can make to their existing Google campaign.

As a thank you, Globalteer have built some water filters in Cambodia in our name!

In Cambodia, 1 in 7 children die before the age of five from preventable diseases such as typhoid, malnutrition, malaria, dengue. The common denominator in many of these is waterborne illness. To address this issue Globalteer work with an organisation that is constructing and providing bio-sand water filters. They are a low cost way to provide potable water to impoverished areas from any water source.

For more information, see the Globalteer website.

SearchPath IT!

We've just launched a new feature on our site, with the working title of 'SearchPath It!'.

SearchPath It! is designed to help website visitors save, promote and share your website and blog pages. Feel free to add these buttons to your own site.

Why would you use our SearchPath It?
2 reasons - it helps your visitors and it helps your search engine rankings.

Visitors
Increasingly, website visitors are using mobile bookmarking & social bookmarking sites, such as del.icio.us, Google Bookmarks, Digg to save & promote their favourite websites and blogs. Giving someone an easy way to save your site helps them find you again...it even helps other people find your site too!

Search Engines
For you, as a website owner, social bookmarking is one of the many factors that Google uses to judge your website for its rankings. The more people bookmarking and sharing your website and blog, the better.

We have 3 buttons available - SAVE IT! for saving webpages, FEED IT! to save a blog and SHARE IT! for people to share interesting pages and articles with others.

You can even view general statistics, such as how many times the button has been clicked on your pages - as well as which service the visitor chose.

The services we've included are considered some of the best...get your own buttons now, they're free!

Who uses the Internet?

We've known for a while that the 'Silver Surfers' are the fastest growing Internet user group but, according to Hitwise, by the end of this year they will be the largest Internet user group in the UK .

Silver surfers, or those people over 55, already make up a larger market share than their grandchildren, but the widespread availabililty of broadband has encouraged many more over 55s to log on.

And their most commonly used pages? Search engines, shopping and pornography, along with travel, news, investments and yachting. (It still doesn't mean my mother can log on!!).

Why Pay Per Click?

Clients often ask what benefits PPC brings to the table, when used to compliment a company’s natural search engine rankings and we underline the following:

1. Advertisers can appear on page 1 of search results, where natural search returns the company’s website several pages into keyword results.

2. Easier to promote a niche, or limited time only, product or service. Eg Christmas promotions or summer sales where search results would not pickup your changes soon enough.

3. With PPC, you are better able to target actual buyers – many people clicking natural results are browsing or researching rather than buyers.

4. Easier to be found for many more terms than it is possible to optimise on.

5. PPC gives far more control and flexibility.

6. Extends a website’s reach where natural text does not appear. Some relevant terms, such as “skilled” will probably appear naturally on a builder’s website where perhaps “confidence” might not.

7. Promote new products or services, which have not yet had time to establish naturally. PPC gives almost instant results, which natural search cannot offer.

It is clear that PPC, along with Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) efforts can have a positive effect on the amount of traffic a website receives and the increased number of conversions that come with it.

If you are considering or already have a Pay Per Click campaign give SearchPath a call for FREE advice and a management quote.

The Title Tag

As we know search engines have placed the utmost importance on the quality of links you have into your site. These and their associated anchor tag have become the most crucial element in optimising you web presence to rank well for certain phrases in search engines results.

However, of equal importance is an element that is completely under your control, and a lot less difficult to effect, namely, the title tag.

If you are unaware, this is the tag that controls the words at the top of your browser (in the blue strip at the top in Internet Explorer). The title tag also controls the text that shows up as the clickable link in the search engines results for that page.

Here are some things to remember about the title tag:

1. Always have one
2. Include your keywords
3. Make it clickable
4. Make it relevant to the page
5. Google let's you use 70 characters but only use the bare minimum because the importance is weighted
6. Use different title tags for each of your pages

One of the key factors in search engines optimisation is still under your direct control... use it wisely.

Web analytics - maximising your ROI

Do you know how visitors are using your site? Do you know which campaign converts visitors best? If you and your company want to get the best results from your website, you need Web Analytics.

A good Web Analytics package will tell you everything you want to know about how your visitors found you and how they interact with your site. This then enables you to focus your marketing resources on campaigns and initiatives that deliver the best ROI, and improve your site to convert more visitors.

We're great fans of Google Analytics - it's free, easy to install, easy to use, integrated with AdWords and gives comprehensive, actionable information.

Analytics is the part of the SearchPath solution that ties everything together - SEO & PPC in that we can see which PPC provider, campaign or keyword is most effective, which SEO phrases are working; it gives us actionable information which we can use to tweak and test web pages to optimise their effectiveness; crucially it helps us to help you maximise your website's ROI.

For more information on Web Analytics, call SearchPath on 01285 643 496.
